Afghanistan Education Action. What we do.
Since their return to power the Taliban have decimated the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. Forbidden from going to secondary school or university, they are forced to stay home, out of sight.
Without an education, they face a very bleak future. |
Afghanistan Education Action provides quality education for women and girls in Afghanistan, while championing human rights.
Through education, advocacy and research, we aim to create positive and lasting change in Afghanistan and beyond. |
Watch our Story.
“I simply could not witness the despair, tears and grief of the girls of my homeland, so I started to light a candle in the dark, to keep the hope of the bright day alive.”
Angela Ghayour - Founder of Afghanistan Education Action
Our Schools.
Two online schools currently provide education to over 800 students, aged between 13 and 35 years old. 70% of them are women and girls, who attend classes delivered by over 400 volunteer teachers, on a wide range of subjects, from the safety of their homes.
The Herat Online School was established in August 2021 in response to the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and the AEA International School is our latest initiative formed in 2023, which offers education in English and aims to offer formal qualifications in the future. |
Our Story. |
Student Stories and Impact. |
When the Taliban took control in 2021, activist and former teacher from Afghanistan, Angela Ghayour was horrified to witness the devastating attack on women’s rights. Herat Online School was established as an immediate response to the ban on girls' education in August 2021 and from that Afghanistan Education Action was set up as a UK registered Charity to oversee Herat Online School and the more recent AEA International School.
Our Work.Through the Herat Online School, hundreds of qualified volunteer teachers from around the world offer lessons each day on a range of subjects from maths, science, computer science, English & Persian literature, art, philosophy, women’s health and even calligraphy.
The AEA International School is our latest initiative, in its pilot phase, offering structured lessons in English, with an aim to offer formal qualifications in the future. |
Our schools offer a vital lifeline for students, who are stuck at home, denied their right to an education. We receive many messages of support and gratitude from students who are so happy to be able to learn and stay connected with their peers.
Partnership with Children on the Edge.UK registered charity Children on the Edge has been working alongside us since 2022. They are supporting us as we establish ourselves as a newly registered Charity, Afghanistan Education Action, and develop our online school programme.
They have over 30 years of experience working alongside partners in more than 18 countries, to find bespoke solutions to difficult problems and shape excellent ideas into viable, sustainable programmes. We value their support and guidance as a new charity. |
